OUR HISTORY

Albert Hammond was born in Bishops Caundle, Dorset on 25th December 1887. At the age of 13 he is recorded in the 1901 census as a worker with the occupation of “carpenter’s help”. He later moved to London where he was employed as a carpenter, and married Ellen Timms. Their first son Bert was born there in 1909.

By the time of the next census in 1911, the family had moved to the Yeovil area, where a second son, Dick was born in the same year, and their only daughter, Freda, in 1912. Following a return to Dorset, a further three sons, Jim, Percy and Roy, were born at Long Burton between 1914 and 1922.

During the First World War Albert served in the RFC and RAF as an air mechanic, returning to Long Burton afterwards, where he resumed work as a carpenter, and started training Bert as his assistant. When Bert was 15 years old they were offered work at the Cattle Market in Sturminster Newton, and cycled there every day for about a year, before moving to an address in Glue Hill around 1926. By 1927 the business of Albert Hammond Carpenter & Joiner was established in premises in the Market Square, with a workshop and yard at the end of what is now the Church Street Car Park.

All remaining five brothers gradually joined the expanding business, which by the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 was trading as A Hammond & Sons Builders, Decorators, Carpenters & Joiners. During the war it served as Sturminster Newton RDC No 1 Utility Party.

Albert died at the age of 58 in June 1946, leaving his sons to carry the business forward. By 1949 they had relocated to the current office in Church Street, and A Hammond & Sons Ltd was incorporated on 7th October 1959. Significant early local projects have included the conversion of the Tythe Barn in Hinton St Mary, the construction of Sturminster Newton County Modern School, Brinsley Court, Sturminster Hall, Library and Police Station.
